Under the Patronage of His Majesty King Albert II

Every four years, the city where Adolphe Sax was born hosts the international elite of the classical saxophone. Having survived a preselection process and the viewing of DVDs by an international jury, all the remaining candidates will come to Dinant, where each will present a 20-minute programme drawn up by the Competition's Musical Committee (made up of professors from Belgium's higher conservatories).

That round leads to the selection of 18 semi-finalists, who will each present a 40-minute programme with a focus on a more contemporary and more difficult repertoire. The musicians will have to show outstanding qualities in order to reach the final, which will be held in the Collegiate Church (Collégiale) in Dinant.

Six of them, about to become laureates, will perform two concertos, accompanied by Het Kamerokest from Bruges. One of the two concertos is a work from the existing repertoire; the second is a work commissioned specially for the Competition by the International Adolphe Sax Association. The composer of the commissioned work, Images, is Jan Van der Roost.
